Others about the poetry of Martijn Benders:
'The poet whose observations are more right than reality itself'
Samuel Vriezen
"Two of the five pricewinners especially caught my attention: Martijn Benders and Thomas Möhlmann. Martijn Benders explains his position towards poetry in the appendix in many confusing lines, but luckily his poetic efforts are much more effective. The book 'Dolpension van de hemel' opens with his wonderful 'Haydar goes to Istanbul to buy himself a peacock'. It's a lyrical stream of associations from which a fan of imagery about Istanbul unfolds. It seems impossible to distill a logical story or a plausible meaning out of the poem, but every line contains imagery that's right on the mark and every next line takes this onwards and gives it an unexpected twist. He also controls the art to push such a stream of imagery into an absurd, hilaric form as he shows in his poem 'Gospelsong'.
Marco Nijmeijer, Rotterdams Dagblad
" I should assure you that Martijn's poetry is rated highly by many; his commentary, while often curmudgeonly, rarely failing in commitment and wit; his hair profuse and deliciously unruly."
James Sheard
This has got some of the nice sound and image combinations I've come to expect (and in most cases appreciate) in Martijn's work.
