Open letter to Merlin Sheldrake

Dear Merlin Sheldrake,

I wanted to reach out and express my deep appreciation for you and your family. Your work in biology has been truly groundbreaking and has helped to push the field forward into a new phase of understanding.

I am currently working on a book that aims to restore the history of mushrooms to humanity. I believe that this is a crucial task, as mushrooms have played a vital role in many aspects of human life, yet they have often been overlooked and undervalued. My research has led me to learn more about your work on the subject, and I must say that it has been incredibly enlightening and inspiring.

When in 2020 I first heard the call of Amanita Muscaria and started to consume this sacred mushroom I felt very strongly that it wanted me to tell its true story. Later this year I will publish that as the book SHHHHHHHHHROOM.

Your insights into the interconnectedness of life and the role that fungi play in ecosystems has opened my eyes to the true complexity and beauty of the natural world. Your work has also helped me to understand the importance of preserving and protecting these vital organisms.

I just wanted to thank you for all that you have done and to let you know that your contributions have not gone unnoticed. I believe that your work will continue to inspire and educate people for generations to come.

I am known as a poet, so my book will contain a lot of mushroom poetry as well. My latest collection Poetry to Read in the Dark is available for free, should you also be interested to read poetry:

Poetry to Read in the Dark (2022) (362 downloads)

Oh yeah – if you are ever in the Netherlands I would be honored to meet you and host you, or to arrange
a symposium about mushrooms. Drop me a line, and I will send you a paper copy of SHHHHHHHHROOM
to read. And once again, thank you for your beautiful work!

Sincerely, Martijn Benders
