“The Fate of the Mirrors”

This article is based on this Dutch article of Martijn Benders

Amanda M. Melito is a poet from São Paulo currently residing in Paris. I came across her on Threads, where she posts a relentless stream of intellectual contemplations. This piqued my interest enough to start translating some of her Brazilian poems, which she mainly publishes on Instagram, as far as I can tell.

In my new collection, an additional mirror poem by Amanda will be included (provided she grants permission) – while writing, it brought me to the song “Sleepwalking” by Christian Death:

Of course, I’ve taken significant liberties in translation. In poetry, white space is everything.

This is, of course, pure poetry – you can’t convince me that poetry lovers don’t have this as a ringtone.

But I also know this track from this CD, which I owned at some point:

This mix was created by the band Lights of Euphoria – a German gothic wave band. (NP: Krieg gegen den Machinen)

Anyway, an early morning fills up with mirrors.

Sincerely,

Martinus Benders
